Ultimate College Football Tour, 2008 Edition June 19, 2008

As we count down the days to kickoff, let’s take a look at the biggest contests of 2008 (preseason edition). Imagine a 15-week tour across the country to witness America’s best college football teams, talent and games.

Provide me plane fare, tickets and tailgate options, and I’m there.

It would be easy to simply pick the best games every week. I wanted to keep my tour fresh: namely, a different setting and scenario each week. To ensure parity and balance, and a variety of teams and experiences, the caveats of this tour:

1) One home game from every conference (arrgh Sun Belt) and one major independent (arrgh Notre Dame) is required.
2) Teams may be featured only once (although consideration is merit-based without limits)

Big Day Prep Showdown Games May 24, 2008

The matchups for the Detroit Metro Sports Commission’s Big Day Prep Showdown IV – albeit a pared down version this year with four games in one day – are out.

The showcase game on Friday, August 29 at Eastern Michigan’s Rynearson Stadium is a much-anticipated matchup between storied Muskegon and upstart Detroit King.

Muskegon looks to have the early edge as King loses a plethora of senior talent – many players to the college ranks, including Nick Perry (USC), Darrin Williams (Cincinnati), Flenard Whitfield (Western Michigan – hoops).

The Big Reds enter 2008 fresh off a humbling 41-7 loss to Hudsonville in a district final.

South Lyon vs. Walled Lake Central – 11 a.m.

Detroit King vs. Muskegon – 2 p.m.

Lake Orion vs. Rockford – 5 p.m.

Ann Arbor Pioneer vs. Saline – 8 p.m.

Several people have asked about this, so I want to clarify which games make it on our Top Games schedule.

For High School, the Top Games section includes the best 25-30 games each week with a special emphasis on games we plan on seeing.

The colleges include each game involving Michigan teams, each game of the Big Ten, MAC, GLIAC and MIAA conferences, and top games with national implications and those that are shown on television.

Pro schedule highlights the Lions and national TV games.

We will base our picks off games on these lists. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Props to the schedule makers at each Mid-American Conference school, or maybe those kudos should go to the officials at BCS schools for not shying away from MAC teams. There are a good number – 39, by my count – of intriguing games pitting MAC clubs against BCS conference teams this season.

25 of said games occur during the college season’s first four weeks. Some of the most highly-anticipated matchups include Purdue at Toldeo (Sept. 1), Iowa vs. Northern Illinois at Soldier Field (Sept. 1), Western Michigan at West Virginia (Sept. 1), Miami (Ohio) at Minnesota (Sept. 8), and Ohio at Virginia Tech (Sept. 15).

Whet your appetite? There are 34 other MAC vs. BCS games left on the slate. Check out the Top Games page for a full list.

Apparently DeLaSalle’s Week 1 game with Kettering slipped my mind when I wrote about the CHSL/PSL Challenge. For the record, there are five Week 1 games involving the Detroit leagues:

Kettering vs De La Salle @ Fitzgerald H.S. –  7:00 Friday
Southeastern @ Catholic Central – 7:00 Friday
U of D Jesuit @ Renaissance – 7:30 Friday

Brother Rice @ Denby – 1:00 Saturday
Cass Tech @ St. Mary’s Prep – 1:00 Saturday
